Have you always been a designer? If not, what was your previous profession? And what triggered the career switch?
I have always been a designer. I have opted to study fashion design after my “O” levels, much to the dismay of my parents. In fact, I don’t think they knew I was doing fashion design until my 2nd year, thinking that I enrolled into graphic design or something. I am a NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) and Central Saints Martin graduate, majoring in Fashion Design womenwear.
What makes your line/brand stand out?
Our minimalistic, detailed designs, universal style and sensitive approach to highlight femininity by our clothes.
What is your personal favorite piece from your entire collection/production and why?
I have a lot of favourites in my collection. One of my all-time favourite is perhaps the Wrap Dress, which for me is a product that I felt have met my brand’s mission – Making Fashion Matters. To have a piece that marry style and comfort and at the same time, gives our wearer an understated elegance which is timeless, thus being a keeper.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I can be inspired by almost anything. Using a concept and fusing with my label’s aesthetic which is clean and rather geometric that provides a modern take on the concept. I have taken inspirations from tribal tattoos, shadows, hummingbird, traditional craft… the list goes on.
What are your plans for the brand in the future?
Our plan for the brand in the immediate future is to participate in trade shows, hence working closely with Taff on our internationalisation plan. Also, to continue pursuing making of good designs and hopefully one day GINLEE will be an international label that can proudly represent Singapore.
How have you/your brand benefited from Taff’s membership programmes?
We have benefited from Taff membership by being constantly updated with relevant industry news and networking sessions. The courses offered were also carefully curated and tailored to the needs of us budding Singaporean designers.
