Have you always been a designer? If not, what was your previous profession? And what triggered the career switch?
No, I haven’t always been a designer. I come from a corporate background, having completed an MBA and working as a management consultant. I realized that I wanted a career more fulfilling and could use both my creativity and business skills to build something of my own. So I decided to create my own swimwear brand to both scratch that creative itch as well as fill a hole I saw in the market.
What makes your line/brand stand out?
August Society focuses on modern functional design and attention to detail, using top-quality fabrics and construction to ensure a perfect, comfortable fit. We encourage our customers to mix and match pieces so they get the best look for their shape or mood, and we offer both edgy, bold prints and fun solids for endless individual expression that won’t go out of style.
What is your personal favorite piece from your entire collection/production and why?
I am very happy with our new Tropicana printed swimwear coming out this summer. It’s just a vibrant, fun print that gets me excited for summer holidays and beach trips. It’s really the essence of the brand – classic cuts featuring bold, unexpected print combinations.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I’ve travelled quite extensively and it’s an important part of who I am. I’m inspired by colours and textures from different places, as well as seeing how I can use traditional patterns in new ways.
What are your plans for the brand in the future?
We are looking to expand aggressively into international markets in the coming year or two. We’re also looking to see if there are other product categories that we want to enter, aside from women’s swimwear.
How have you/your brand benefited from Taff’s membership programmes?
The networking opportunities are great. I’ve met a lot of interesting people at Taff events, as well as tapped on the members directory for things like sourcing leads. The team is also super helpful providing overseas sales opportunities, such as support for trade shows and wholesale platforms. It’s just nice to have a network of people in Singapore doing the same thing as you – it’s hard enough running a fashion business, it’s better to have some support!
